NDIS

We speak directly to government on NDIS rollout.

By Marriott , November 14 2017

Yesterday a Roundtable discussion was convened by Tim Wilson, Federal member for Goldstein, and the Hon Jane Prentice, Assistant Minister for Social Services and Disability Services to hear from local disability services, families and advocates about challenges with the NDIS. Marriott Support Services was represented by our Board Chair, Virginia Rogers, together with Dan, Janine and Sarah.

Discussion included:

  • The importance of whole of life planning, following some feedback that a limited number of goals per person was being included in approved plans. This can restrict the inclusion of goals that prepare for whole of life transitions.
  • A focus on providing better pathways into employment, especially for school leavers. Marriott’s long term relationship with Berendale School assists young people to transition successfully to employment.
  • The ongoing challenge to ensure quality planning, given the limited experience of planners and unrealistic work load.

At Marriott Support Services we working to address these challenges. We take whole of life planning seriously and have a new project about to start to assist people transition to retirement.

We don’t leave the planning process up to chance and provide comprehensive support for planning by;

  • Our NDIS Engagement Co-ordinator, Sarah McCarthy works with individuals, families and carers to prepare for their NDIS plans.
  • A recent Carers Victoria workshop hosted by Marriott was fully booked.
  • Our regular information sessions are very popular.

Following the roundtable we welcomed the Minister and the Member for Goldstein, for a tour of our Keys Road site to meet staff and to provide a closer view of how we work to create opportunities for people with disability.

We spoke with the Minister of a role for the Federal Government in promoting social procurement as a way to expand the pool of employment opportunities. Social procurement refers to when government and business choose to buy from a social enterprise.

We are committed to supporting people with intellectual disability with quality supports and when needed we speak plainly to government.
