Partnership with inclusive leisure centre recognised.
The results speak for themselves, Marriott’s partnership with Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC) was recognised by winning the Community Impact Award, at the recent Aquatics and Recreation Victoria’s award night.
The Attendant Support Program (ASP) was nominated after experiencing substantial growth since its inception less than two years ago.
The ASP aims to bridge the gap between people with disability and their support needs participating in mainstream sport, leisure, health and wellbeing. The objectives are that users will benefit by increased confidence, emotional support, social connection and exercise.
The program takes the hassle out of having a carer or family member accompany a participant at the gym. Instead, the ASP matches the person with a disability with an ASP worker who can assist them with all of their support requirements, including personal care.
ASP can be accessed seven days a week through all areas of GESAC, including the gym, aquatics and group fitness, providing a personalised service tailored to the individual.
Since January 2018 the ASP has experienced strong growth, here are some measures of success;
- Client numbers increased from 11-60
- ASP total support hours grew from 26 per month to 110
- The team of ASP qualified trainers went from 6 to 31.
Since 2011 GESAC’s partnership with Marriott Support Services has effectively created a ‘culture of inclusion’ at the centre to ensure people of all abilities have opportunities to participate in their local leisure centre. The ASP is a demonstration of this culture of inclusion.
Well done to the GESAC team led by ASP Co-ordinator, Libby Dewar and Marriott’s Cameron Lee, who provides ongoing training to staff to ensure all aspects of the Centre are disability inclusive. For more information http://www.geleisure.com.au/gym/attendant-support-program
