Janine’s reflections on our annual meeting
Last night was a great success and I thank all staff who gave of their time to help or attend our AGM. We farewelled our current Chair and Treasurer (Virginia and Richard) and thanked them for their nine years of dedicated service. I am reminded of their strong contribution and commitment to Marriott. They will be missed.
Our key speaker, Chris Varney, of I CAN Network spoke of how diversity is good news for every workplace and community. He calls on the Marriott community to “be brave enough to embrace the opportunities to do things differently in the light of an NDIS reality”. He spoke of changing our language to “low support needs” and “high support needs” – thus eliminating the stigma of categorising people.
We had many nominations for the Marriott awards and I congratulate and thank all nominees.
The winners were:
Allan T Marriott Achievement Award – Awarded to the staff member who have shown a standout can-do approach and/or have achieved great things at Marriott.
Sarah McCarthy who has assisted many of our participants and families to navigate through the NDIS process. Sarah has listened to families and supported them to present the best possible case to the NDIA. As a result, many of our participants have received excellent plans with many new supports.
The NDIS journey can be an emotional time for participants and their families and Sarah has always displayed utmost professionalism in dealing with many emotional moments.
Community Hub – Awarded to a participant who has been willing to try new things, has given 100% in the last year, or has accepted a new challenge.
Tony Hirsch is a valued and respected member of the Marriott Community hub. He always arrives punctually and sets the common room up in the mornings- setting the chairs out for the participants in the mornings. Assists his peers – walking down the street with them to buy the paper or their lunch, brings the wheelchair out at Reception in the mornings and will put it back in the afternoon.
Environmental Services – This award is given to a supported employee for going above and beyond.
Nigel Crawford arrives at work he is always willing to help move the work vehicles, I never ever have to ask him. This improves our vehicle flow and aids in a safer work environment.
Marriott Industries – This award is given to a supported employee for going above and beyond.
Ann Carroll for going beyond and above her duties. Seeing we needed extra help and asking if she could come an extra day to help us out and by filling in where needed on several jobs.
Pam Rivers Volunteer Award – Pam Rivers has played a key role at Marriott over many years and we are pleased to be handing out an award in her name. This award is to recognise a volunteer who has contributed significantly to improving the service quality at MSS.
Shauna O’Conner for her ongoing willingness to help others. Shauna is a great support to staff and participants alike. We commend her on her dedication to all at Marriott.
We do have a great community at Marriott.
