Great staff and great opportunities – Cam

By Marriott , April 24 2018

Following a recommendation from a work colleague, Cam was curious about Marriott Support Services (MSS) and wanted to get involved. Nine years on, he is still here and thriving.

At Marriott Support Services we value our staff and offer opportunities to build a career to suit them.

Tell us about some of the roles you’ve had at Marriott Support Services.
While at Marriott Support Services I have worked:

At Marriott House as a disability educator.
At Employment Options as an employment consultant assisting people with disability to gain employment in the open labour market.
At Marriott Industries and Marriott Enviro Services conducting wage assessments.
Leading Disability Awareness Training with local councils, businesses and organisations to promote the benefits of employing people with disability.
Providing one-on-one support to a number of participants.
Helping out with various activities including driving the old Marriott bus, co-ordinating the odd weekend away – even busting out a few tunes on the guitar at the Marriott fete.

If the saying “variety is the spice of life” is true then I have certainly enjoyed a spicy professional life here at Marriott.

What you are doing now….
I have been working on the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC) project since its commencement 5 years ago. The aim of the role is to ensure that the Centre has an inclusive culture. This involves running fitness and sports programs for people with a disability, including a weekly basketball competition with around 70 players, group fitness programs for people who use a wheelchair and various aquatic based programs.
I promote participation at the Centre with local disability service providers and various organisations while providing relevant Disability Awareness Training to all 300+ GESAC staff members every year.

I conduct Wage Assessments for supported employees at Marriott Industries and at Marriott Enviro Services and provide one-on-one support to a participant who is on an Independent Support Package (ISP). Recently, I have also been providing some Support Co-ordination as part of the NDIS plans.

You can see that throughout my time at Marriott there have been opportunities to do new roles and projects.

In my spare time I squeeze in a Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Monash University.

How has MSS supported you to develop your career?
Marriott has been really great at providing training opportunities and supporting my external endeavours, for example, I was able to work while completing a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and a Mental Health First Aid Course. More recently, Marriott also provided me with flexible work options so that I could complete a Graduate Diploma in Psychology.

What keeps you at Marriott Support Services?
I really enjoy working with interesting and motivated people, both at Marriott and at GESAC. I learn a lot and really enjoy the process of finding innovative and exciting ways to make sport and leisure accessible to everyone.

What you would like to do in next and into the future?
I am definitely interested in pursuing further studies in Psychology and eventually becoming a Registered Psychologist. I am also really looking forward to playing a role in the transition to the NDIS. It presents a number of interesting challenges and Marriott is in a unique position to meet those challenges and thrive in the new environment.
