I am Janine Simpkin, the newly appointed CEO of Marriott Support Services, a Melbourne based not- for- profit organisation. Our aim is to support people with disabilities to live a life of their choice.
Families have trusted us for over 40 years to help them embrace change and encourage them to see the potential and the individuality of each person in our service. Marriott will grow under NDIS although we will never lose sight of the uniqueness that defines us nor will we forget our roots.
The purpose of this blog is to keep you updated with how we are working for the benefit of our clients through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
Marriott was one of the first organisations to introduce a ‘person centred” approach over 10 years ago. The NDIS has allowed us to continue leading the way in sector development. It is giving us the opportunity to improve someone’s life by supporting people to choose supports that will give them greater inclusion in the community and build their capacity to live a life of their choice.
• Choice of staff
• Choice of individualised or group support.
• Choice of times to be supported – whether that be the movies on a Saturday night or an art class on a Friday morning.
• Choice of location.
• Choice of skills capacity support that address areas where improved skills will reduce the need for formal supports in the future.
• Choice within using funding.
The implementation of NDIS allows Marriott to develop new ways of providing support, which acknowledges the diverse needs of our community. We are better able to look at the person as a whole and develop supports directed at their plans for their future.
Marriott is in the process of developing new and exciting innovative programs through further developing associations within the community, which increases inclusion, and opportunities that better assist our clients and their families. Some examples of this include; Support Coordination, Customised Employment and School Leavers Employment Support, Weekend and Out of Hours Support and extended hours in our Marriott Community Hub (previously known as Marriott House). Keep an eye on our website for further information.
This inaugural blog is also a great platform to sing the praises of our amazing staff and as many of you know I have been with Marriott for over 20 years. In this time, the hard work, dedication, and competence of my co-workers continues to dazzle me. Everyone at Marriott works tirelessly to meet our mission of working with adults with disability to reach their potential. The breadth of expertise, experience, and passion on our team is nothing short of astounding. Being able to come to work every day and expect to hear stories of how we are supporting people to achieve their personal goals through NDIS is a source of endless fascination and joy to me.
I would also like to thank our community associates, without whom community inclusion would not be possible. Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre, Mentone Life Saving Club, Goodstart Childcare Centre in McKinnon, Fairway Aged Care Home in Sandringham, local businesses in McKinnon Road, Rotary, our 70 or more community volunteers, Mordialloc Community House, Melbourne Water, Vic Roads, South East Water and Casey Council to name a few.
Janine with (from L) volunteer Susie, Cathie one of our parents, Rowan who volunteers and is Janine’s husband, and Marise a Community Hub participant, at our recent Biggest Morning Tea.
Keep up-to-date on current news, research and events!
