A cuppa with Ian

How long have you been with Marriott Industries, and what do you do?

I have been at Marriott Industries for nearly four years.  My role is the 3PL Coordinator (3PL is 3rd Party Logistics), and I oversee the Unit 10 Warehouse.

My main responsibility is to manage the 3PL area. Our customers receive orders via their websites, then the orders are sent to us, and we pick, pack, and dispatch the orders ready for shoppers to receive. No day is ever the same at 3PL.  Some days I come to work and see a flood of orders and it is our responsibility to ensure they are ready in a time efficient manner to be collected by the shipping courier.

What is your favourite thing about working at Industries?

I enjoy interacting with the supported employees, it is always great to come into work and have a laugh and some banter, especially around the football teams 😊. If you are in a bad mood, you can be cheered up very quickly.

Which Industries 3PL customer do you think everyone should consider when online shopping?

All our customers are web-based, so this makes it hard to choose from, although if you are looking at supporting a good cause and seeking to help the planet, I’d suggest checking out Ecobin. They have a range of items that help with recycling.

In your role, what is the biggest benefit you see with Marriott supported employees?

I enjoy assisting with training and supporting the supported employees to learn various skills. It is fantastic watching their progression and pride when they complete a job very well. I love assisting the team to reach their goals of working in open employment, and of course seeing their journey along the way.

What is something about your job no one really knows about?

3PL Warehousing gets extremely busy, there are seasonal changes, happening all year round, as well as holidays like Christmas and Boxing day, which increase the volume of online shopping orders. COVID-19 and lockdowns have influenced consumer behaviours, as people are spending more time at home online, rather than physically shopping in stores. We have a lot more work on!

What is your most memorable facepalm moment at Marriott?

Oh, how many paragraphs can I use?  There are so many to choose from.  It will be boring to most people but as we pick and pack, we need to be good with our numbers, going back to my customers with silly incorrect numbers gets me every time ☹

Thanks for the fun photo Ian! (Btw, Ian doesn’t look like this all the time)
